Hello students & parents,
On Edmodo and on this blog, I will be referencing useful websites which you can find on the right side of this blog under 'Must See Websites'. We will be using these websites and more throughout the year to reinforce what we are learning in the class at home as well, so please encourage your child to visit these sites often!
Below is a brief description of our 'Must See Websites' so far:
MATH WEBSITES:
IXL, Create a Graph, Math Playground, Nelson Math- all of these sites allow the students to choose their grade level and a strand in Math to practice, for example- division.
Math Playground also has videos showing specific Math lessons.
Nelson Math is an excellent website as there are additional practice questions and games for each lesson that is taught in class. Students, try out more questions and games by clicking on the lesson number for each chapter in the Student Centre. Parents, there is also workbook answers in the Parent Centre so you can help your child with their homework!
LANGUAGE WEBSITES:
Spelling City allows students to work on their vocabulary by entering words they learned in class and playing a variety of games using these words.
TumbleBook Library accessed through the Toronto Public Library by clicking 'TumbleBook Library- access online' contains hundreds of books that are read to you as you read along & hundreds of books that you read online, including books in various languages.
On Storyline Online, students select a story that is read to them (with visuals) by a voice actor.
The Stacks-Scholastic offers a large database of book reviews, book trailors, author spotlights and more.
NEWS SITES:
Kids National Geographic and Time For Kids are interesting sites to explore current and global news with pictures and videos.
OTHER SITES:
Brain POP and Fun Brain are sites with games and practice in all subject areas.
Dance Mat Typing allows students to practice and master their typing skills.
Khan Academy offers many videos of lessons in various subject areas.

WORD Q!
Hello students & parents,
I would like to share with you a GREAT tech app called WORD Q!
WORD Q assists students in their writing with a computerized voice that reads aloud their typed words and gives them prompts for correcting grammar/spelling. This program is also able to predict the words that you are about to type and reads the entire sentence/paragraph once you finish the sentence. WORD Q is extremely useful for students working on editing in the writing process and for students who struggle with spelling and grammar.
WORD Q is FREE!!! Download from this site: http://www.goqsoftware.com/en/. Download WORD Q from the site (not SPEAK Q) and please contact me at evita.massaro@tcdsb.org or check on EDMODO for the activation key (password) in order for WORD Q to work.

We survived our first week!
Hello students & parents!
We have had an amazing first week back! I am really impressed with you students as you have been an absolute pleasure to teach- way to go & keep it up!
Here are a few updates:
- We welcome Ms. OB, who is our student teacher! She is with us everyday until end of October.
- The DAILY 5 has begun! As I mentioned in my September newsletter, the DAILY 5 is a new Language program we are implementing this year, which involves stationed learning.
We are working on the station READ TO SELF this week, which includes:
- We have completed our LANGUAGE ASSESSMENTS and our MATH ASSESSMENTS. These initial assessments are very important as they help us understand how we can help the students learn better.
- The students completed a MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCE test to determine the best way they learn. Interesting enough, we have quite a few interpersonal learners (people learners) & very few visual learners. Check out our school wall by our classrooms soon as we will have the results posted!
- EDMODO is up & running! Please check out your child's Edmodo account often as we will be using Edmodo in all subject areas. The students are very excited to learn using technology!
- The students have been enjoying our TWITTER DOOR! Please note that our class DOES NOT have a real twitter account- we are just 'tweeting' on our class door in response to prompts that I create.
- The students created fabulous I AM FROM poems as a way to introduce themselves to the class. We have great poets in our class! Please take time to read them as they are posted outside our classroom.
Please check out some of our class pictures below. I will post more later this week. A weekly schedule will be sent home as soon as all subject times are finalized!
A special thanks to all the parents of my students for getting back our so many school forms so quickly!

- Choosing a JUST RIGHT book that interests you
- , 3 ways to read a book (words, pictures, retell),
- Building stamina by reading a bit more each day
