Spring Showers Bring May Flowers!

Happy Spring!

We have been busy, busy, busy! Please keep checking the blog for updates on our weekly/bi-weekly posts as we have lots to share!

Parents, if you would like a picture of your child at SNOW VALLEY or our recent trip to FORT YORK, please email me at evita.massaro@tcdsb.org and I will happily send you the photo :)

REMINDERS:

- I will be away Friday at a Tech workshop. Students will be given another long work period to complete their Space PBL presentations so they should come prepared to work with their group.

- Sub lunch for those who put in orders on Monday- yum!

- Math chapter 9 quiz on Monday. Students should continue to use Mangahigh, IXL & Nelson Online to practice. All links to these sites are on the right side of this blog.

- Space PBL presentations next Thursday & Friday. Students have been working hard in class as a group and using our Edmodo groups.  One more week to go!!

- Space unit quiz will take place the end of next week or the beginning of the following week to test the students' knowledge on the space unit.  The students have been working as a group creating a new planet for their Space PBL presentation and while doing so, they have been learning all about our solar system independently but with various resources and my guidance.

- Scientist in the School Electricity Workshop:  Thursday April 25th PM! Mark your calendars! Thanks to CSAC for funding this amazing program!

WEEKLY UPDATE:

- In Math, we have completed Chapter 8 and I was happy with the class average! If your child received a C or lower, they are able to complete a re-test next week as long as they attend the Math lunch workshop for review!

We are now working on Chapter 9- Multiplying Decimals. Students are encouraged to continue their practice by using sites such as Mangahigh, Prodigy, IXL & Nelson Online!  I am impressed that so many students practice their Math using these online sites each evening. Keep getting your gold medals students!

- In Language, we have begun POETRY for April, one of my most favourite Language units! Many students initially groan at the idea of poetry but end up loving it as we have lots of fun with it and end with our annual POET'S CAFE- more details to come! We continue to practice INFERRING while we examine LYRICS and HAIKUS this week. During Daily 5, students are reading and writing haikus and they are analyzing lyrics on Edmodo.

We are also working on PROCEDURAL WRITING and connecting it to our ART PBL. Students are working in small teams to design an Art lesson, which sends a strong message about something important, such as poverty. Students also are working on creating a procedural piece on how the Art lesson will run.

- In the Social Sciences, we continue to explore the Aboriginals and as mentioned above, the students are busy preparing for their Space PBL presentation. I am very proud of the students as working with a group on such a big activity is no easy task, but they are doing really well overall! It is amazing to see the students independently researching facts about our solar system in order to make their created planet seem real. I also love the fact that students are using new online presentation tools such as SlideRocket and Edcanvas and that students can handle BYOD(Bring Your Own Device) so well.  I am super happy with the success of PBL so far! Looking forward to the final presentations next week!
